All Section Awards Given To Five Trojans

Despite just falling short of a WPIAL playoff berth, the Trojan baseball team landed five players on either the first, or honorable mention All Section Teams.  The group was voted upon by section coaches at a meeting held at Mount Pleasant High School.  Senior Nathan Kohuth (Pictured first from left) was named as a first team pitcher and finished with the second highest vote count behind Laurel Highlands junior Ethan Mildren, who was also named section Most Valuable Player.  Junior Scott Dixon (Pictured second from left) was the leading vote getter of all infielders. as he earned first team honors at third base.  Dixon was a first team pick a year ago as an outfielder.  First year starter Josh Cantanzarite (third from left) earned a first team selection at first base.  The Senior started every game at that position.  Senior's Tyler Pakos (fourth from left) and Jim Hauser (fifth from left) each earned honorable mention accolades at the outfield and catching positions respectively.  To view a complete listing of the Section 2-AAA All Section Team, click here.

Trojan Season Ends With Another Tough Loss
Salem pulls out 5-4 win in regular season finale
Greensburg Salem Game Box Score

The 2009 Derry section baseball season ended pretty much the way that it started.  The Trojans opened section play with a 5-3 loss to Kittanning, and in that game, Derry left thirteen runners on base and could not get a key hit.  On Friday at Seton Hill College, Derry again wasted opportunities at the plate, and lost 5-4 in eleven inning's to Greensburg Salem.

The game was picked up in the bottom of the seventh with Greensburg having a runner at second base and one out in a 3-3 game.  After Tony Patton walked the first hitter, a Trojan infield error loaded the bases.  Salem's Steve Fagert then lofted a fly ball to centerfield that looked like would be deep enough for Salem to win the game, however Nathan Kohuth had other ideas as the senior caught the ball and fired to Jim Hauser at the plate to cut down the runner and send the contest into extra innings.  Derry would strike first in the extra frames to take a 4-3 lead.  After one out in the tenth inning, Justin Rectenwald doubled, and scored on a Josh Cantanzarite single.  The Trojans, however, could not score another run in the inning despite loading the bases.  GS tied the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning as the first Salem hitter was hit by a pitch, stole second, and would score after one out on a sacrifice fly.  Derry again had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the eleventh, but could not get a two out hit.  In the bottom of the inning, two singles and a walk gave Salem the 5-4 win.

Derry ends a disappointing season with a (7-7) section mark, and (10-9) overall.  Five of the seven Trojan losses were by two runs or less, and in the 5-2 loss to Laurel Highlands on Wednesday, Derry had a 2-1 lead heading into the final inning.  Mount Pleasant handed Derry their worst section loss of the season back in section game two.  That final was 12-5.  Click here for end of season statistics, and check back later for more on the 2009 Trojans.

Trojans Beat Scotties However Fall Short In Postseason Chase
Indiana finishes as third seed in Section 2-AAA
Southmoreland Game Box Score

Derry did its part on Thursday afternoon by pounding Southmoreland 14-2 in a game that was halted due to the mercy rule.  Unfortunately the Trojans did not win enough of their close games throughout the year and it came back to haunt them, falling short of a playoff berth.  Derry needed a win and an Indiana loss on Thursday to have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs.  The Indians, however, foiled Derry's last hope by beating up on Greensburg Salem 11-3.  Greensburg, who just a few days ago was (9-2) in the section, dropped to (9-4) and one win behind Laurel Highlands (10-4).  If Derry defeats Salem tomorrow, the title will go to LH outright.  If Salem wins, the two teams will be Co-Champs for the second year in a row.

The Trojans fell behind the Scotties 2-1 early in Thursday's game, but put together a ten run fourth inning, and added three more in the fifth to seal the win.  Adam Mylant picked up the mound win.  More details on the game are coming later.  Derry will travel to Seton Hill College at 11 am tomorrow to resume their game with Greensburg Salem.  Check back later for details.

Dixon Stifles Mustang Bats But Trojans Fail To Win Again
Derry still alive in playoff chase despite early loss
Laurel Highlands Game Box Score

It was the same old story for the Trojan baseball team, in fact, it has been the story of the season. Outstanding pitching, but late breakdowns on defense and the lack of timely hitting.  Trojan junior Scott Dixon pitched another phenomenal game, only to see his efforts go by the wayside in a 5-2 loss.  Dixon was going up against Laurel Highlands ace Ethan Mildren, who along with Dixon, is a junior that is being recruited by a number of schools in all divisions.  Mildren fanned 14 Derry hitters on the day and gave up just four hits, but found his team trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning.  Dixon struck out the first batter, and then the next two hitters reached on fielding error's.  After a line drive that was speared by shortstop Seth Kohuth for the second out, Dixon walked the next batter, and Carmen Congelio looped a ball just over the outstretched glove of Justin Rectenwald at second base, and barely in front of right fielder Josh Mroskey.  The single allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score to make it a 3-2 game.  Congelio then stole second base and scored on a two-run double by Mildren.  The only extra base hit of the game that Dixon gave up.

In game two, the Trojans battled back from a 3-0 deficit to Greensburg Salem to tie the game at 3-3.  The game was suspended in the bottom of the seventh inning with Greensburg batting, and a runner at second and one out.  Nathan Kohuth pitched extremely well and was still on the mound when the game was halted because of terrible conditions.  Nate Spohn pitched all seven inning's for Salem.  Check back later for more information on these two games.

As far as the playoff scenario: For the Trojans to get into postseason play, Indiana must lose their remaining game to Greensburg, and the Trojans must beat Southmoreland tomorrow and Salem when the game is resumed.  The date and time for the Salem game has not yet been determined, and the WPIAL committee will have the final say.  If the game would remain a tie and Indiana would lose, the Trojans would be (7-6-1) in the section and Indiana would finish at (8-6).  That would give Indiana a higher winning percentage, even though both teams would have the same amount of losses and the Trojans defeated Indiana twice during the regular season.

Patton Shuts Down Wildcats But Trojan Bats Silent In Loss
Trojan Senior right-hander Patton deserved better fate in 2-1 loss
Game Box Score

The chase for a playoff spot in Section 2-AAA has now become more urgent for the Trojan varsity baseball team after dropping a 2-1 decision at Kittanning Tuesday afternoon, in a game that took just over one hour and fifteen minutes to complete.

Derry's Tony Patton was stellar on the mound giving up just three hits in six inning's of work.  Patton fanned six Wildcats and walked just two.  Kittanning senior lefty Russ Bishop was not as sharp, as he walked six hitters and pitched out of several jams.  The problem was, the Trojans could only muster one base hit, a Patton RBI single that gave Derry the lead 1-0 in the second inning.  Derry failed to get two very important bunts down in the game, had a runner thrown out trying to move from second to third on a ball that slipped past the catcher, and also left seven runner's in scoring position. The Trojans could not get any key two out hits.  Nathan Kohuth, who reached base three times, two by walk and once hit by the pitch led off the second by drawing a base on balls.  He then moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on the Patton base hit.  That would be all the run production Derry could get.  Kittanning scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  After a leadoff walk, Bishop hit a come backer to Patton, who threw high to second base and everybody was safe.  Curtis Schilling then dropped down a bunt in front of home plate.  Catcher Jim Hauser elected to go to third base, and the runner was ruled safe on a bang-bang call.  Shawn Arble then reached on a fielder's choice to make it 1-1, and Travis Brocious lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Wildcats the 2-1 lead.

The Trojans (6-5) in section play will  host Laurel Highlands at noon tomorrow, and then travel Greensburg Salem for a 4:00 game.  Derry will wrap up the regular season Thursday at Southmoreland.  Click here for updated team statistics.

Trojans Battle Laurel Highlands Monday
Four straight games will determine if Trojans will be in postseason

A heavy dose of rain Friday morning, followed by more showers during the night caused the postponement of Friday's game with Southmoreland.  The game will be made up on Thursday at Southmoreland, which means the Trojans will play four straight games this week, with a WPIAL playoff berth on the line.  Although Derry controls its own destiny to reach the postseason, it will not be an easy task.  Monday, Derry (6-4) will host second place Laurel Highlands.  The Mustangs are (7-4) in section play and lost to Derry at home a couple of weeks ago by the final of 3-0.  Tuesday Derry will travel to Kittanning.  The Wildcats (4-7) handed the Trojans their first section loss a month ago.  On Wednesday, the team will travel to first place Greensburg Salem.  The Golden Lions (9-2) will be looking for revenge after last weeks 9-3 Derry victory.

Monday's game against Laurel Highlands can be heard on the MSA Sports Network.  Just click on the link and go to "Broadcasts."  The game can also be heard on WMBS-AM 590.  Brian Mroziak has the call from Grandview Field.  Although the station is based out of Uniontown, the signal is strong in Westmoreland County.

Check back Monday or Tuesday for playoff scenario's.  This is one of the closest section playoff races in years, as six of the eight teams are still mathematically alive.  The most surprising is Uniontown, who began the season at (1-4) in section play.  Since then the Red Raiders have won five of seven, and now sport a (6-6) mark. Derry Climbs In Standings After Beating Indians
Game Box Score

Sometimes a win does not have to be pretty, and for as many tough losses the Trojans have endured this season, Wednesday's game with Indiana may have been the balancing act that baseball sometimes gives you.  Derry was on the other side of a game where Indiana was forced into making seven error's, as the Trojans came back from a three run deficit to win 5-3.  Trojan starter and winning pitcher Nate Kohuth did not have his best stuff, but kept Indiana from breaking the game open by getting key outs after finding himself in a few early jams.

After the Indians grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, Derry pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning.  After one out, Senior Tyler Pakos singled, and moved to second on a throwing error by the Indiana third baseman, on a ball hit by Josh Mroskey.  After Scott Dixon reached on a fielder's choice, the Trojan's executed a double steal as Pakos scored to make it a 3-1 contest.  In the bottom of the fourth, it looked like Derry would have a big inning, but only picked up a single run to make it a 3-2 game.  After one out, Brett Mickinac was hit by a pitch and Seth Kohuth dropped a a beautiful bunt single down the third base line.  Again the Indians threw the ball away allowing Mickinac to advance to third and Kohuth to second.  Junior Justin Rectenwald then singled home Mickinac, moving Kohuth to third.  Josh Cantanzarite then hit a sharp ground ball to the second baseman that turned into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Derry would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth as Pakos again singled, and was forced at second base on Dixon's groundout.  In an attempt to get the double play, the ball was thrown away and Dixon advanced to second.  Nate Kohuth then hit a ground ball to the right of the third baseman who fielded the ball but hurried his throw, and threw the ball away allowing Dixon to score from second and tie the game at 3-3.

Derry would finally put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Mickinac led off with a single, and was pinch run for by Jesse Hart.  Kohuth then sacrificed Hart to second.  After a strikeout, Cantanzarite came through with a base hit to left field driving in the go ahead run.  Brett Deichert then ran for Cantanzarite and quickly stole second base.  He would score the fifth and final run on a Pakos double, his third hit of the game.  Tony Patton then came on in the seventh to retire Indiana one, two, three and pick up his first save of the season.  Nathan Kohuth gave up just one earned run in six inning's while running his record to (5-1).  Kohuth struck out eight.  Derry, now (6-4) in section play will travel to Southmoreland Friday at 4:00.  The loss drops Indiana to (6-4), and lost for the second time this season to Derry.   Click here for updated statistics.

Derry Bounces Back With A Big Win
Trojans knock off Greensburg Salem behind an outstanding pitching performance and clutch hitting
Game Box Score

After Monday's loss to Uniontown, the Trojan varsity baseball team knew they had to bounce back with a win, and they also understood that it would not be an easy task going up against (8-1) (11-1) Greensburg Salem, who sits on top of the section standings.  Derry also was up against Junior lefty pitcher Nate Spohn, who had never lost a varsity start.  The Trojans, however, got a stellar pitching performance from their Junior Scott Dixon, and finally got much needed timely hitting, in a 9-3 win Tuesday at Grandview Field.  Dixon fanned nine Golden Lion hitters, while giving up just three hits in seven innings.  Spohn gave up six hits and six earned runs in his five plus innings of work.

Derry spotted Salem and early 1-0 lead, but the Trojans tied the game in the bottom of the third, as Dixon singled home Josh Cantanzarite, who led off the inning by reaching on an error.  Spohn was able to get out of the inning without any further damage thanks to a couple of fine defensive plays.  Greensburg took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning thanks to a two run double off the bat of designated hitter Scott Brewer.  Two walks on extremely close 3-2 pitches led to the Salem rally.  The Trojans would finally cash in baserunner's in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of Spohn's inability to find the strike zone, and some clutch hitting.  Cantanzarite, Tyler Pakos and Josh Mroskey all had good at bats and drew walks.  Dixon then grounded into a force play to score Cantanzarite from third to make it a 3-2 game.  After Tony Patton was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Senior Nathan Kohuth hammered a Spohn pitch to deep left center field for a three run triple to give Derry a 5-3 lead.  While Dixon continued to shut down the golden lion bats, Derry poured on another four runs in the bottom of the sixth.  After one out, Cantanzarite singled and was lifted for pinch runner Jesse Hart.  Pakos then singled to right moving Hart to third.  Hart then scored on a double steal to give Derry a 6-3 lead.  Mroskey then walked and Dixon added an RBI single driving home Pakos to give Derry a 7-3 advantage.  After a walk to Tony Patton, Nate Kohuth singled and Brett Mickinac added a sacrifice fly to give Derry runs number eight and nine.  Dixon set the golden lions down in order in the seventh to give the Trojans their fifth section win, and put them right back into the playoff picture.  The two teams meet again next week.  Derry will host second place Indiana later today in another big section contest.  Game time is 4:15.   Click here for updated team statistics.

The Junior Varsity dropped an 8-7 decision to Salem as the Golden Lions scored in the bottom of the seventh to win.  Derry committed several error's in the game and got solid pitching performances from John Lukon and Andrew McClarren.  Lukon also added two hits, along with Joel Whittaker.  Vince Murphy also belted a two run single.

Derry Varsity Falls To Fourth Place After 5-3 Loss
Uniontown Game Box Score

Not driving in runs when the opportunity presents itself is beginning to become habit for the Trojan baseball team.  Monday afternoon, Derry made the long trek to Wharton Park to take on the Uniontown Red Raiders.  After getting an early 1-0 lead, the Trojans squandered several opportunities, and consequently lost the game 5-3.  Derry stranded nine base runners, and wasted a good pitching performance by Tony Patton, who came in to relieve starter Adam Mylant, who pitched two innings.  Patton, coming back early from a severe ankle sprain gave the Trojans a shot to win, despite not being 100 percent.  A one out double by Josh Mroskey in the Trojan first, combined with a Scott Dixon single and Nathan Kohuth sacrifice fly gave Derry a 1-0 advantage.  Uniontown would score the next five runs to make it a 5-1 game heading into the sixth inning.  Base hits by Josh Cantanzarite and Brett Mickinac helped to cut the lead to 5-2, and Derry had the tying runs on second and third with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but Cantanzarite flew out to centerfield to end the game.  Cantanzarite, and Mroskey finished with four of the Trojans seven hits.  The Red Raiders finished with five.  Derry will host first place Greensburg Salem (8-1) at Grandview Field today at 4:00.  Click here for team statistics updated through the Latrobe game at PNC Park.

The Trojan Junior Varsity picked up a 13-3 win over the Red Raiders.  Eric Reitz was the winning pitcher.  More details coming later.

Trojans Lose Section Heartbreaker To Vikings
Mount Pleasant Game Box Score
Latrobe Game Box Score

For six inning's, it seemed as if the Trojans were going to be able to pad their second place lead in section 2-AAA.  Derry led the home standing Mount pleasant Vikings 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Vikings put together a memorable final frame, and came back to win a 5-4 thriller.  The Trojans took a 2-0 lead early in the game as Scott Dixon delivered a two run double that scored both Tyler Pakos and Josh Mroskey.  MP got that run back to make it a 2-1 game, but the Trojans would add on and score two runs to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh.  The Vikings would use three hits, two stolen bases and a Trojan error to come back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.  The big hit was a two out, two strike RBI single that tied the game at 4-4. Nathan Kohuth pitched six strong inning's before giving way to Scott Dixon, who came in with a runner at first and the Trojans leading 4-3.  Dixon struck the first two hitters out, but unfortunately, the Viking's we are able to get a stolen base that put the tying run in scoring position.  Then with a 2-2 count, Eric Bradley's RBI double that landed just inside the right field line tied the game.  After an intentional walk to Joe Fearer and a stolen base, Alan Wadsworth reached on an infield error that scored Bradley to end it.  Dixon was the hard luck loser, despite coming in to make the pitches to give the Trojans another shot.

Derry will play at Uniontown (3-5) on Monday at Wharton Park, and then host first place Greensburg Salem (7-1) Tuesday and third place Indiana (5-3) on Wednesday.  Derry also lost a 11-5 decision Saturday at PNC Park against Latrobe.  The Trojans could not hold onto a 4-1 sixth inning lead.  Dixon fired the first three inning's and gave up just one run on three hits.

The Trojan Junior Varsity whipped up on the Vikings at Grandview Field as they pounded out ten hits in just four inning's, as Derry won 15-0.  Freshman Andrew McClarren (Pictured on left) picked up the pitching win allowing only two hits.  He struck out seven.  The Trojans were led at the plate by Freshman Frank Wolford, who blasted a solo homerun and a double.  Wolford finished with two RBI.  Freshman Jon Stickle smacked two hits and had a game high four RBI.  Other top performers for the Trojans included freshman Brock Westerbeck who doubled and scored three runs, Junior Robbie Taylor who singled and scored two runs, Jeremy Hauser, a single and two runs scored, John Lukon, a single and two RBI, and David Henderson and Vince Murphy, who each scored twice.

Kohuth Leads Trojans To Fourth Straight Section Victory
Senior right-hander tosses a complete game shutout
Varsity Game Box Score

The Trojan varsity baseball team has not won at Hutchinson field in quite some time.  The last three years that Derry played at Laurel Highlands, a lead slipped away in the final inning, and the Trojans went on to lose.  Senior right-hander Nathan Kohuth made sure that would not happen on Friday afternoon, as Derry picked up a big 3-0 road section win against the Mustangs.  Kohuth was fabulous on the hill allowing just two singles in seven inning's.  He struck out six and walked just one, while tossing just 80 pitches.

The Trojans, who scattered seven hits on the afternoon scored all three of its runs in the third inning off Mustang starter Nick Forsythe.  Junior Justin Rectenwald led off with a single to right, and after one out, Rectenwald advanced to second and third on two wild pitches.  After a walk to Seth Kohuth, Tyler Pakos singled home Rectenwald to make it a 1-0 game.  Senior Josh Mrosky then reached on an infield single to load the bases, setting the table for Junior Scott Dixon, who smacked a two-run single to make it a 3-0 score.  Kohuth continued to shine on the mound, but the Trojans stranded seven baserunner's through the final four inning's.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Mustangs tried to come back as Ethan Mildren reached on an error and Carmen Congelio lined a single to left.  Kohuth, however, would not be denied as he struck out the next two hitters, and got the final out of the game on a ground ball to first baseman Josh Cantanzarite.  Derry is now (4-2) in section play, and (7-3) overall.  The Trojans will host another big match-up on Monday at 4:00 as undefeated Greensburg Salem comes to Grandview Field.  Click here for updated team statistics.

Six hit inning propels Derry to road victory
Varsity Game Box Score

Senior Tony Patton fired four and two thirds of an inning, and the Trojans bats came to life in a big way, as Derry erased an early 2-0 deficit, and went on to beat Indiana 8-4 on Monday.  Patton, (Pictured on left) gave up three runs, two of which were earned.  He struck out three and walked two, allowing six hits in picking up the win.  The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but it would have been a 3-0 lead had it not been for centerfielder Nathan Kohuth gunning down an Indiana runner at home plate.  The Trojans put four runs on the board in the third inning, and most of the damage was done after two outs.  After one out, Josh Cantanzarite singled, and after a strikeout, Derry got consecutive hits from Tyler Pakos, Josh Mroskey, Scott Dixon, Patton and Kohuth.  Before you could blink, the Trojans led 4-2.  After Patton shut down Indiana in the bottom of the inning, the Trojans would add three more runs in the fourth.  Two costly error's ignited a Derry rally that was capped off by a Mroskey two-out, two-run single, and a Dixon RBI double to make it a 7-2 game.  Indiana would add single runs in the fifth and sixth inning's, but Dixon came on to earn his first save of the season.  Mroskey, Cantanzarite, and Dixon finished with two hits a piece.  The trio totaled five runs scored and five RBI.  Derry will play host to Southmoreland on Wednesday.  Game time is 4:00.  Click here for updated team statistics.

Patton finished with three hits on the day, while Dixon and Cantanzarite each added two.  Derry finished with twelve hits on the afternoon.  The Trojans will travel to Indiana on Monday for another section match-up.  Click here to view updated team statistics.

Derry JV in 5-4 Win Over Vikings

The temperature may have dropped throughout the day on Monday, but you would not have been able to tell the way Mount Pleasant came to Derry and had no ill effect on what mother nature presented.  The Vikings took advantage of a Trojan team that could not warm up in any facet of its game, and went on to pound the Trojans 12-5 at Grandview Field.  MP picked up three runs in the first inning off Trojan starter Scott Dixon, and never looked back.  Two walks, a wild pitch, a passed ball, two errors and two stolen bases, combined with a bloop single to left field all helped give the Vikings the early lead.  MP added a single run in the second inning on a leadoff homerun by Brandon Baker, and tallied another unearned run in the third to make it a 5-0 game.  The onslaught continued in the fourth inning off reliever Tony Patton, as the Vikes pushed across three more runs on three hits, and one very costly Trojan error to make it 8-0.  Derry, who left nine runners on base, bringing the total to twenty-two in two games, would make a run in the top of the sixth.  Thanks to a couple of walks, and costly Viking error, senior Tyler Pakos (Pictured above) stepped up and delivered a bases clearing double to left field that made it an 8-4 game.  Josh Mroskey then singled Pakos home to close the gap to 8-5.  Dixon was then hit by a pitch, but Patton popped out to end the threat. MP would add four more runs to put the game away in the seventh inning.  Again, the Trojans had a chance to get out of the frame without allowing a run, but two walks after two outs, along with two error's led to all four runs and a 12-5 final. Mroskey and Pakos finished with four of the Derry five hits.  The Trojans find themselves in a deep hole in section play, now (0-2) (3-3) overall.  Derry is scheduled to play at Uniontown on Wednesday.  Game time is 4:00.  Click here for updated team statistics.

The Trojan JV team was victorious by a 5-4 margin as they traveled to Mount Pleasant.  Winning pitcher Ronnie Polo finished with nine strikeouts in four inning's.  He did not walk a batter and allowed only one hit.  MP scored its runs taking advantage of several Trojan errors.  Polo also pounded out three hits, including a triple, and added three RBI.  Freshman Jeremy Hauser singled twice and scored two runs.  Sophomore Vince Murphy contributed a single and RBI, and Jesse Hart singled and score a run.  The Trojan JV's are now (2-3) and will host Uniontown on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.

Trojans Drop Section Opener To Kittanning
Varsity Game Box Score

The Trojan varsity pounded out thirteen hits, but were unable to overcome some mental mistakes on the bases, and twelve runners left on base, as Kittanning pulled out a 5-3 win.  Senior Nathan Kohuth cruised through the first two inning's, but gave up an unearned run in the third as the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead. Derry would tie the score in the bottom of the inning as Tyler Pakos led off with a double, and would score when Josh Mroskey, who had singled, got caught in a rundown between first and second.  The Trojans led 2-1 after four inning's as Brett Mickinac reached on an error, and scored on a Mroskey single.  Kittanning though would score four times in the top of the fifth on five hits to take a 5-2 lead.  The Trojans continued to get base runners, but could not get the big hit.  In the seventh inning, Junior Scott Dixon (Pictured on left) led off with a single.  One of three hits on the afternoon for Dixon.  After one out, Kohuth walked and Mickinac grounded into a force play.  Pinch hitter Brett Cmar then came through with an RBI single to make it a 5-3 contest, but that was as close as the Trojans would get.  Derry will try to rebound on Monday when they welcome Mount Pleasant to Grandview field.  Game time is 4:00.  Along with Dixon, Mroskey added a three hit performance, and Tony Patton finished with two.  Click here for updated team statistics.

Trojans Make It Two In A Row With Dramatic Win Over Knights
Dixon's walk-off hit seals the deal
Varsity Game Box Score

Junior Scott Dixon's walk-off RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Trojans their second straight close win in two days.  This time a 6-5 decision over Norwin.  The game was scheduled to be played at Norwin, but due to a water main break near the field, the Knights had to travel to Grandview Field.

Knights senior ace Ryan Lousenhizer, and Trojan senior hurler Tony Patton went head to head and both pitched extremely well.  Neither pitcher, however, would factor in the final decision.

For the second straight day, the Derry defense, who at times looked stellar, could not come up with some routine plays, and it cost them.  Norwin took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning, on only three hits.  The Knights were aided by three Trojan errors.  Derry would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Dixon tripled with two outs, and came home to score on a Josh Cantanzarite single to left, making it a 3-1 game.  Norwin looked like they would put the game away in the sixth inning as they scored another unearned run, and were threatening for more.  Junior Adam Mylant pitching in relief of Patton was able to get two big outs to keep the score at 4-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Trojans would catch fire with the bats, as they pushed across four runs to take the lead.  After one out, Seth Kohuth singled and moved to second when Patton grounded out.  Then the outburst began.  Dixon singled to drive in Kohuth making it a 4-2 game.  Cantanzarite followed with a single to represent the tying run.  After a failed pickoff move by Lousenhizer that allowed the runners to move up, Senior Nathan Kohuth tripled to right field and drove in both runs to tie the score.  Pinch hitter Brett Mickinac then drilled a single to left to give the Trojans the lead at 5-4.

The Knights would tie the score in the top of the seventh off reliever Ronnie Polo.  A leadoff hit batsman followed by a double set up runners at second and third.  Norwin then tied the game on a passed ball, and still had a runner at third and nobody out.  Polo, however, would get back to back strikeouts and a groundout, and give his team the chance to win it in the bottom of the inning.  The Knights went with left-hander Nate Ellwood in relief, and Justin Rectenwald greeted him with a line drive single to center.  Rectenwald advanced to second on a throwing error by Ellwood after several tries to pick Rectenwald off first base.  After the Trojans could not successfully get a bunt down leading to the first out, Ellwood would get a strikeout for out number two.  Patton was then hit by a (2-2) pitch, leading to Dixon's first pitch smash into right centerfield to give Derry the dramatic victory.

The Trojans will not play until Friday when they host Kiski Prep at 4:00.  The Trojan Junior Varsity will host Norwin today at Grandview Field beginning at 4:00.  For up to date team statistics, click here or follow the links on the home page.

Junior Varsity Drops Close Decision
Varsity Game Box Score

The Trojan Varsity baseball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit by scoring two times in the bottom of the fifth inning, and then shutting the door on a 3-2 win over Penn Trafford Monday at Grandview Field.  The game was the opener for both teams.

The Warriors struck first in the top of the second inning taking advantage of two Trojan errors, and led 1-0.  Derry would tie the score in the bottom of inning two, as starting pitcher Scott Dixon walked, and was lifted for courtesy runner Tyler Pakos, who moved to second on a wild pitch.  Senior Josh Cantanzarite then singled to center moving Pakos to third, and he scored on a Nathan Kohuth sacrifice fly.  Dixon continued to stifle the Warrior hitters until the fifth inning when leadoff hitter Mike Cima doubled off the chalk on the right field line, and would later score on a Trojan error to make it a 2-1 game.  Kohuth then relieved Dixon and was able to shut down any further PT threat.  The Trojans would then strike for two runs in the bottom of inning five.  Three walks loaded the bases, and Senior Tony Patton came throgh by ripping a two-run single to right, giving the Trojans a 3-2 advantage.  Kohuth did the rest as he pitched the final two scoreless inning's, and did not allow a hit.  Dixon and Kohuth combined on a four-hitter.  The Trojans could only muster five hits in the game off solid Warrior pitching.  Derry will travel to Norwin today at 4:00, in a game that was rescheduled due to the threat of rain on Wednesday.  Click here for updated team statistics.

The Trojan Junior Varsity dropped a 4-3 decision to Penn Trafford.  Freshman Eric Reitz pitched extremely well in a losing effort.  Reitz went the distance.  Freshman Andrew McClarren paced the Trojans with two hits and an RBI.  Junior Joel Whittaker added an RBI single, and Jeremy Hauser finished with a single and RBI. The JV team will host Norwin today at Grandview Field.  Game time is 4:00.
